Number of wrongful death pedestrian crashes with SUVs rising

Motor vehicle accidents are an unfortunate reality for people in Marietta, throughout Georgia and across the U.S. No one expects to leave their home and be in a crash that will cause severe injuries and death, but it happens with a disturbing frequency. Understanding the causes of these crashes is important as it can help legislators and law enforcement to craft strategies to reduce or even prevent them. One issue that is happening with a troubling regularity is fatal pedestrian accidents with an SUV. Concerns about the rise have sparked questions as to why this is happening.

According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), over the past 10 years, there has been an 81 percent increase in the total of pedestrians who died in an accident with an SUV. Prior to that increase, the 10 years before that showed the numbers had been in steady decline. Several issues are believed to factor in. This includes increased speed limits and drivers who are distracted. But, IIHS says that the increase in SUVs on the road is a bigger problem than previously realized.

Because of their size and construction, it is believed that an SUV-pedestrian accident causes the types of injuries that result in a fatality. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) says that the total number of pedestrian deaths in a crash has risen to almost 6,000 annually. Since 2009, that is an increase of around 50 percent. The numbers should be placed into the right perspective. Since more people are driving SUVs, there is a greater chance that an accident with a pedestrian will involve an SUV.

Despite the statistics with SUVs and pedestrians, anyone who has lost a loved one in a wrongful death incident as a pedestrian should be aware of certain factors that are integral to considering a legal filing. That includes the necessary evidence, what time frames must be adhered to, what the parameters for recovery are, and more. The funeral costs, loss of companionship, lost wages and other issues can make a fatal accident difficult to overcome. Having legal assistance to consider a lawsuit is key.
